COURSE CURRICULUM

MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT

 

Pre-algebra and Fundamentals of Algebra

A course designed to meet the needs of those students who enter high school with weak arithmetic skills so that they may be successful in high school mathematics. The course begins with a review of arithmetic skills, particularly fractions, decimals, percents and the relationship between the three. It continues with a development of the number system with the four operations, simple equations solving, order of operations, geometric and other applications throughout; starting with the whole numbers, progressing to integers, and finishing with a strong emphasis on rational numbers with ratio and proportion. In addition to order of operations and solving of equations, other algebraic topics will include simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions. 

Grade 9

Elementary Algebra

A continuum of the Fundamentals of Algebra. It will include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division of polynomials, evaluation of polynomials, the exponent laws for integral exponents, factoring, rational expressions, solving linear equations and inequalities, solving quadratic equations by factoring, problem solving, and graphing linear equations using the intercept method. 
Prerequisite: Pre-algebra and Fundamentals.

Grade 10

Intermediate Mathematics

The course combines topics from Geometry and Algebra II. An informal, practical approach to Geometry is taken in order to study the properties of points, lines, planes, figures and polygons. This includes the formulas for area, perimeter, circumference and volume. The course also concentrates on solving right triangles, direct and inverse variation and an introduction to conics.
Prerequisite: Elementary Algebra. 

Grade 11

Algebra I

This course is designed as a first course in algebra. Students will have been introduced to the rational numbers, simple solving of equations, and order of operations in a previous eighth grade course. Emphasis is on evaluating algebraic expressions, simplification of expressions, solving equation, slope, functions, and the application of these skills including graphing linear equations. 

Grade 9

Geometry

This course attempts to impart a foundation in the science of reasoning. In the process, it studies the properties of points, lines, planes and some solids while emphasizing the use of theorems and their proofs. Both deductive and inductive reasoning are stressed. A brief introduction to solving right triangles is included.
Prerequisite: Algebra I

Grade 9 or 10

Algebra II 

This course prepares students for college mathematics and the college entrance examinations. The course content includes linear and quadratic equations, a thorough study of the real number system, expansion into the complex number system, relations, functions, graphing, logarithms, exponential functions, and conic sections. 
Prerequisites: Algebra I or Elementary Algebra with A/B average and department approval.

Grade 10 or 11

Trigonometry

This course is designed to prepare students for college mathematics. It includes circular functions, right triangle trigonometry, trigonometric functions and their graphs, inverses of trigonometric functions, applications of trigonometry, and polar coordinates and graphs. 
Prerequisites: Algebra I and II, and Geometry.

Grade 11 and 12 

 

1 Credit

Pre-Calculus 

This course is designed to prepare students for calculus. It is primarily a college algebra course. Emphasis is on elementary functions and quick sketching of their graphs, polynomial, logarithmic and exponential functions, sequences and series and binomial expansion, complex numbers and their graphs, and an introduction to the other concept of limit. 
Prerequisites: Algebra I and II, Geometry, and Trigonometry.

Grade 11 and 12

 

1 Credit

***Note: Trigonometry and Pre-Calculus are listed separately here, but they must both be taken to receive full credit. It is an elective for grade 12, but mandatory for grade 11 students who qualify.

Advanced Mathematics

This course is designed for students who will be non-math/science majors in college and is an alternative to the pre-calculus/ trigonometry and calculus electives available for seniors. Topics discussed will include linear functions, quadratic functions, exponential functions, trigonometric function (restricted to triangle trigonometry), series and sequences, probability, and statistics. Prerequisites: Algebra II or Intermediate Algebra.

Grade 12

 

1 Credit

AP Calculus

This course is designed to prepare students for the AP Calculus AB test. A student may earn up to 4 college credits with a high enough score on this test. Topics include limits, derivatives, curve sketching, integration, and applications of derivatives and integration. These concepts include what is covered in most colleges Calculus 1 and the first half of Calculus 2 courses. Students will be required to complete assignments periodically throughout the year in preparation of the AP test in addition to their regular assignments. In order to receive AP credit, 5 on a 4-point GPA scale, students must take the AP test in May.

 Prerequisites: Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.

 

Grade 12

 

1 Credit

Honors Calculus

This course is designed for students who do not wish to take the AP Calculus test. The topics covered will be the same and the course work will be similar, but students will not be required to complete periodic AP practice worksheets or take the AP test. Students will receive honors credit for this class, 4.5 on a 4-point GPA scale .

 Prerequisites: Algebra I and II, Geometry, Trigonometry, and Pre-Calculus.
